Descriptive Writing

As we are in the middle of summer, there are plenty of things that may escape the ordinary eye, or are just too normal for us to think about.  Take some time one day to find one of these things and look at it in a new light.  Imagine where it could fit into the world.

Here is an example of creative writing I have created that describes the existence of a yellow scarf in the middle of summer:

The air was thick with the scent of lilacs on the breeze.  The morning dew glimmered on their petals like minute diamonds.  A great blue heron drifted nonchalantly on the still surface of the pond, reliving a daily ritual.  In the east, the sun was just rising, giving the whole scene a soft coating of rays.  Along the gentle current of the water and egg-yolk yellow scarf swayed as if following music.  It seemed out of place in the morning quiet.

Try taking an ordinary object and writing a descriptive paragraph or two on it.  It will improve both your writing and observation skills.
