A Chat With Silence

I’ve never truly known silence
There’s always something to hear
Always noises, sounds
Echoing inside my head
Songs repeating over and back
Reverberating around
Looping on an endless track

How do you hear silence?
Do you listen very closely?
Strain your ears to hear nothing
Wait for it to come
Bask in the midst of enveloping chaos
And let the hubbub fall away
Then silence stands in front of me

Can you play silence?
Let it roll along
Like a toe-tapping song
Cover the headphones to my ears
And shut out the world around
Listen to the silence
Call it up on the telephone
Talk for a little while
Have a little chat
About life
Listen to Silence’s sad story
How the world is too loud
To pay attention to silence anymore
